From the Publisher...

Cyberspace is that medium between people made up of telephone calls, electronic financial transactions, e-mail, commercial on-line systems, the Internet, bulletin boards, mailing lists, file archives and the global hypermedia database known as the World Wide Web.

Welcome to the premier issue of Cyberspace Today! Born out of the need for Californians to gain access to the wild world known as the cyberspace this publication is dedicated to bring the fantastic, and sometimes scary, world of computers and computer-mediated communication to you, our readership.

News about cyberspace is splashed across our television screens, talked about on radio and makes headlines in newspapers and the nation's magazines. Stories like the dominance of video games in our childrens lives, movies like Lawnmower Man or War Games and the latest escapades of cyber-criminal Kevin Mitnick have intrigued the American public.

Now, with the incredibly rapid growth of the Internet combined with the explosive presence of computers in the home interest in cyberspace has reached a fever pitch. Combine the general interest of the populace with the self-enabling capability of worldwide wide publishing and mass communication, the word cyberspace conjures an exciting future that is now a cornerstone of Western popular and political culture.

Computer experts, corporate users and hobbyists have long had regular forums and periodicals to learn about computers and networking. Regular people, i.e. students, parents, youths and non-technological workers also need a forum to discuss and analyze trends in cyberspace, especially when it concerns local access and other community factors. While cyberspace is global in nature, you still need to find a local phone number and assistance to actually board an on-ramp to the mythical Information Superhighway.

Cyberspace Today is dedicated to giving you access to this exciting new medium by focusing on the local Internet service providers who work hard to provide you access to the Internet with a local telephone call. Every month we will be delivering a comprehensive list of California Internet service providers indexed by geographic area, making it easy for you to shop for the most economical way to get on-line.

Once you've found your way on-line Cyberspace Today will guide you to the most interesting, entertaining and useful places on the Internet. Our regular Web Wanderer section features the newest and hottest places on the World Wide Web, plus printing a comprehensive index of over 100 of the most useful Web sites.

Finally what good would be a local newspaper without a lively letters and editorial page? Please send your letters and e-mail to me making suggestions on how to improve our publication. We need your help to make sure Cyberspace Today will become a valued and useful resource. Thank you for picking up our premier issue, and look for Cyberspace Today every month!
